game modes
würfelblock.de offers four game modes for yahtzee-style dice games — from classic to unusual. you pick the mode when starting a new game, together with one of the three rule sets: yahtzee, yatzy or generala.
classic 1–6 players
the classic mode. each player fills in their own independent column — enter scores, scratch boxes, collect the bonus. the rules of the chosen rule set apply — with yahtzee, the ones everybody knows.
- 1 to 6 players
- everyone plays for themselves
- bonus: 35 points from an upper sum of 63 (yatzy: 50, generala: no bonus)
- highest total wins
battle ×2 points
a competitive mode where players go head to head. each box can be filled successfully by only one player.
- whoever scores a box automatically scratches it in every other player's column
- whoever scratches a box forces every other player to attempt that box next
- if another player makes the box, it is scratched for the rest as well
- double points: if one of the others makes the box that was forced on them, their score counts double — so scratching is a risk
- while forced boxes are open, no other boxes can be filled in
- highest total wins
battle mode turns the game into a tactical duel — when do you scratch, when do you take the risk? every decision affects everyone at the table.
minigolf 1–5 rolls
the game becomes minigolf — instead of collecting points, you count rolls. fewer rolls wins.
- every box has a clear target: for example “three ones” or “full house”
- you enter the number of rolls you needed (1 to 5)
- if you miss the target in 5 rolls, 7 penalty points are entered
- the “chance” box becomes “min. 23 points”
- bonus: whoever makes all upper boxes in 18 rolls or fewer altogether (3 per box on average) gets −10 points
- lowest total wins
- whether you play top to bottom or choose freely which box to fill is up to you to agree beforehand
minigolf mode turns the game on its head and rewards efficiency over luck.
countdown 200 → 0
borrowed from darts: instead of collecting points, you count down from 200. the first to land on exactly zero wins.
- every player starts at 200 points
- every score entered is subtracted from what remains — the bonus counts too
- boxes can be corrected at any time, as long as the remainder does not drop below zero
- you have to land on exactly zero: an entry that would push the remainder below zero is not allowed (bust)
- the first to reach exactly zero wins
countdown mode rewards planning ahead — the last few points are often the hardest.
mode and rule set 4 × 3
the mode and the rule set are two separate questions, and a new game answers both. the mode says how the columns relate to each other — everyone for themselves, against each other, counted in rolls, or backwards from 200. the rule set says which boxes are on the scorecard at all and what they are worth.
bonus 35 from 63 — known as kniffel in germany
pairs are added, bonus 50 from 63 — played mostly in scandinavia
no bonus, higher values on the first roll — from spain and argentina
every one of the four modes can be played with any of the three rule sets — battle with generala, or minigolf with yatzy, just as well. in minigolf the −10 point bonus applies with every rule set. what each box requires is on the rules and scoring pages; on the scorecard itself, the tooltip on every row says it.
